Challenge

As industry veterans, the team at ReSource Waste Services, a leading privately owned solid waste management company in New England, saw firsthand how valuable materials were being lost in construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Despite having recovery systems in place, too much of its non-ferrous metals were slipping through and ending up in landfills.

They needed a solution that could significantly improve recovery without adding unnecessary maintenance headaches. Previous machines from other manufacturers broke down frequently and failed to meet recovery expectations.

That meant missed revenue and more recyclable material being sent to disposal.

Process

In 2018, ReSource Waste turned to STEINERT and installed its first eddy current separator. These machines use a powerful magnetic rotor to repel non-ferrous metals away from other materials, enabling fast, contactless separation and higher recovery rates. It didn’t take long to see the difference. The system delivered immediate results, and ReSource Waste quickly recognized its impact on both recovery and reliability.

“When we brought the machine into our operations, we knew immediately that it more than doubled our recovery out of the materials.”

David Divito, VP of Operations

ReSource Waste has since expanded its use of STEINERT equipment and now operates six eddy current units across multiple locations, each helping improve performance while reducing maintenance headaches.

Result

From the very first unit, ReSource Waste knew they had found a game-changer. STEINERT’s advanced eddy current technology more than doubled their non-ferrous metal recovery, capturing high-value materials like cans, flashing, siding, and copper piping that were previously missed and sent to landfills. This shift not only reduced waste but created a new revenue stream.

The reliability has been equally impressive. One unit has run for nearly a decade without major maintenance, eliminating the downtime headaches ReSource Waste experienced with other systems.

“With an engineering background, I was expecting to have to figure out how to fix the machine quickly to be certain we didn’t experience significant downtime. It wasn’t necessary. I have a STEINERT machine right now that I haven’t touched in 9 years for major maintenance.”

Gilbert Sano, Director of Projects and Maintenance

The investment was a clear win for ReSource Waste. The equipment paid for itself quickly thanks to increased recovery volumes, long-term durability, and minimal maintenance. As ReSource Waste continues to grow, STEINERT’s technology and support remain core to their ability to lead the C&D recycling industry.
